Distribution centers deal with a large number of items being unloaded from inbound trailers and then loaded onto outbound trailers. The transportation of these items takes up a significant portion of available time for each shift. The layout of the dock doors determines the distance that a worker is required to traverse to the correct destination for the carried item they are carrying. If the layout of the doors is not optimized, he worker would have to travel longer than what is necessary. To ensure that distribution centers have the optimal layout, the team is building an application that takes doc data as user input and returns the best possible layout. The data that is provided allows the application to find congestion at each door and then assigns each door in a facility a set function and destination. The application then determines how many man hours are required to finish the day’s work based on the layout. Small changes are then made to the layout until the lowest amount of man hours is reached. This is then deemed the optimal layout and the application is presented to the user. The team wants the application to be simple and straightforward so that any user is able to run it.
