The introduction of phones and other devices which are used daily by the public has allowed the spread of bacteria to increase. Bacteria and viruses can live on surfaces of these devices and be transported to hospitals, schools and other public places. VariClean is a product which kills any bacteria on the surface to help reduce the spread of disease and ensure clean and safe public interaction. Through the utilization of UV-C LED lights which kill bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms by breaking the bonds of their DNA, our team is able to give a high disinfection rate in a short amount of time while being user friendly to the public. The VariClean does this by taking in a device or small object and exposing it to intense UV-C light while maintaining a simple user interface of just a start and stop button that anyone can use. The system is designed primarily as a stationary device to be placed in high traffic public areas. Through our repeated testing our system meets all of our engineering requirements while being reliable. It kills microorganisms that can be harmful while maintaining a high level of safety for the user by both completely shielding them from the UV-C light and if for some reason the user needs to get inside the machine there is a hall effect sensor in the lid that when lifted will cut all power to the LED lights, allowing the user to get inside without ever being exposed to the potentially harmful light.
