Drowning is a worldwide problem, and according to the CDC, 390 Americans drown in residential pools every year. Moreover, drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children between the ages of 1 and 4. To date, protective measures against drowning are education and anti-drowning devices. However, the existing devices on the market are limited, expensive, and often require swimmers to wear sensors on their body. Therefore, we have designed a cheaper drowning monitoring device that requires no worn sensors and can be used in residential pools. The device consists of an array of Doppler radar sensors placed both above and below water to track swimmer location and activity. The device detects if a person is underwater too long which causes an alarm to go off and a notification to be sent to a cell phone. This device will enable peace of mind for swimmers and prevent drownings.
