Project Description Heading link

In December 2019, the first identified cases of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) were reported in China, following an outbreak throughout the seven continents by the end of 2020; leaving no place on earth unaffected, including the subzero temperatures of the Antarctic. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised social distancing as the best possible precaution to prevent severe and widespread infections until there was a herd immunity developed, because the mode of transmission of the virus from an infected person is coughs, sneezes or talks without facial coverings in close contact (within -6 feet) via water droplets. The objective of our project is to build and design a portable device that can detect the presence of a human within 6 feet from the user and alert the user via sound and vibration which can be a critical tool for the blind. The usability of this device can be further extended to personal security and can be used by late night commuters to be aware of their surroundings. The system uses a human detection sensor that has a 4-channel nondispersive infrared sensor along with a buzzer and a vibration sensor. This system is being designed to detect humans within 6 feet from the user, record their temperature and on the basis of the readings from the PIR sensor, detect the direction of the person’s motion, and if those readings vector the human within 6 feet from the user, alert the user using the buzzer and the vibration sensor. Our final product would be a small box that can be attached to the keychains making it portable and easy to carry.
