With the novel COVID-19 pandemic, petty crime cases and carjacking have skyrocketed. The local police departments are very often unable to respond to these crimes in time this problem is especially prevalent in low-income neighborhoods with underfunded police forces. We are responding to this emergent need by developing a security system that will monitor one’s vehicle and give an active alert so that they and law enforcement may quickly respond. This endeavor will entail implementing a low-power microcontroller that upon detection through an infrared sensor, will capture an image and send it to a centralized server which will dispatch the alert via SMS and email. Targeting the low-income demographic, the service must be minimal in cost, and must be convenient to adopt. For less than $100, the device must be able to connect to the local network, monitor the vehicle, and send the user an alert with an attached image to be used as evidence. Thus far the project is able to connect to WiFi, detect motion, capture an image, and send emails to users selected in a database.
