Project Description Heading link

The purpose of this project is to design a new steering wheel for the F20 formula car that the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) will be racing this year. The steering wheel is a major component that aids the driver’s ability to control the vehicle. The new steering wheel should improve the driver experience by having an ergonomic design, and an intuitive shifting layout. Through market research and consultation with the chief engineer of SAE, the shifting mechanism was narrowed down and the team chose the design with the idea of simplicity to limit component failure rate. The steering wheel includes three momentary push buttons, two of which are for gear selection in sequential order, and another for launch control.
