Project Description Heading link

Our senior design product, named “Poppy”, is a tracking and communication device designed to help keep children and the elderly safe while outside of their homes. The device is shaped to look like a name tag to be worn around the neck; it may, however, also be placed in a coat or backpack pocket. It contains electronic circuitry to realize real-time positioning and emergency call functions, which help family or friends to remotely track the position of the wearer, and allow the wearer to press a button to automatically send a text message for help at any time. Poppy is simple and easy to use. Its safe and reliable design concept allows the user to enjoy the safety of remote monitoring and emergency texting without any required training or complicated interface. The user simply wears the name tag whenever traveling outdoors and presses an emergency button when help is needed. Once the button is pressed, those in the pre-programmed contact list are sent a text message. This text message is in the form of a link to a web page; by clicking on this link family members are instantly directed to a map showing the user current location and route history. This information can also be obtained on-demand by sending a text message to a specific number. No special smartphone apps need to be installed to interact with Poppy. Other product features include auto-signaling the contacts when the user is outside of a specified area, recording the user’s location history, web page interface eliminating the need to install special smartphone apps, and wireless charging of the device. In addition, the Poppy name tag displays a QR code so that strangers can help a user get back to home by viewing pertinent information on the user’s web page.
