The world we live in is becoming increasingly skeptical so body cameras are a necessity for many police districts as they need to show and maintain accountability to their constituents. These body cameras have natural limitations that make them inconvenient for police use, such as relatively low battery life, and large file sizes. This being said, recording only audio removes many of the body camera’s limitations. The loss of the video component may seem like a large detriment but many times, an audio recording is all that is needed to understand a situation. In addition, audio recording uses much less power and data, which will lead to far longer battery life (7+ days compared to the 14 hour of a body camera) and much reduced storage needs. In addition, audio recording is a much more trivial task than video recording and thus requires simpler and therefore cheaper hardware. This translates to an extremely low cost. Most body cameras can cost up to $1000 while our device will cost less than $50. As we all know, many police departments, especially small ones, don’t have the budget for even bulletproof vests. Some policemen must resort to using personal vehicles to respond to large incidents. The low cost of our device will put peace of mind within their reach.
