Project Description Heading link
Rotor-based drones have become a staple for many different applications, ranging from warfare to hobby use, but they have yet to match the maneuverability that flying mammals and insects have. This project aims to correct this deficit by producing a drone that uses flight mechanisms similar to that of a hummingbird. Instead of using multiple rotors to produce lift, this drone will use a wing that travels in a figure-eight motion to generate the lift. The horizontal and vertical components of the figure eight motion are controlled by one linkage each. A 3D printer is being used to fabricate the prototype, and the prototype successfully moves two wings in the desired figure-eight pattern. The ability for the drone to fly is still being developed.
