Our project design is a software application with the purpose of helping ophthalmic patients, particularly those suffering of low vision, to effectively adhere to medication implementation after each doctor’s visit. However, current solutions have failed to consider a way for LOW vision patients to effectively use their app. Therefore, we included into our design a Built-In Automated Audio Feature (for assisted navigation), made all text at least 18-size font, and used white text, dark background – black or dark gray – throughout our design. That being said, our chosen platform is Google’s MIT App Inventor, which is compatible on Android devices. Our software incorporates two major features: 1) Alarm reminder for taking medications, and 2) a feature for medication distinction. Our Medication feature enables the doctor to upload an image of a drug, as well as type a brief memo for the medication description and name. In addition, he can leave a short voice recording to summarize the aforementioned information that the user can playback whenever. Moreover, our Medication feature is connected to the Alarm reminder in that it allows for the user to set the frequency of drug usage, the interval between drug use, and the delay alarm interval (5 – 60 min) to sound the alarm again if the user does not respond at the appointed time. Finally, we included a Med Tracker feature that records the date and status (i.e. Taken, Not Taken, Delayed Usage, and No Response) of each medication and displays it into a bar graph and a Google Sheets document. Currently, we have been working with a UIH Retina Clinician to conduct iterative testing for usability. Our app will enable patients to follow medication usage more effectively and enable physicians to more efficiently identify the root cause of medication non-compliance.
