Machine Usage Algorithm Using Vibrational Data for Cost Analysis in a Machine Shop

Hydro Inc. uses multiple machines for manufacturing and repairing pumps and components. Machines such as lathes are essential to the machine shop. The lathes in a machine shop will have differing schedules and some can be used very often, while others will hardly be used at all despite their continual energy and maintenance costs. In order to determine whether a machine was causing Hydro Inc. to lose money, a machine usage algorithm was developed using MATLAB. Hydro Inc. currently has several Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) sensors placed on their machines which record vibrational data from all three axes (x,y,z). Using the vibrational data recorded by the IIoT sensors, the MATLAB algorithm determined the percent usage of the machines and frequency rate. By determining machine usage and performing a cost analysis of the machines, machine shops such as the ones housed by Hydro Inc., a decision could be made as to whether a machine should be kept or removed from the facility.
