In recent years, the concept of mixed-use buildings has become the norm in dense urban areas. A mixed-use building is defined as a building with more than one purpose built into it. Examples of this can include a parking garage on the bottom of a building with residential units above it. In the case of our project, we want to retrofit the existing Halsted parking garage on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago with two additional stories on top of it to serve the role of a two-story study lounge. On the first floor of this new addition, we will be creating a modern computer lab and add additional tables for collaborative work. The second floor of this addition will be entirely dedicated to private study rooms that can be rented out to students. This concept should be implemented, as the undergraduate population at UIC has been rapidly increasing in recent years and additional study space would be extremely beneficial to future students attending this university. We also plan on adding additional safety measures to this building on the floor level of the parking garage due to past security issues at this location. For our results, we will provide a report on the projected cost of our project and the number of students that our additional space will be expected to accommodate. We will provide models of our proposed project along with drawing plans and renderings so we can fully demonstrate the vision we have for our project along with the specific details of what the inside will include.
