The visually impaired should have more options to assist them during travel. JAAM-Svestoska is developing a product called the Guiding Angel. The Guiding Angel will assist the visually impaired by notifying them of incoming objects using a lidar sensor with directional beeping. The frequency of the beeps changes based on how close the object is. This will let the user know where objects are coming from as they navigate through the world. The buzzers are going to be on a strap around the users head. The lidar sensor will be on a strap attached to the user’s chest. This design was based on our survey. One big complaint that visually impaired people have is that there is a certain stigma to using a white cane. Although they say there is a noticeable benefit to using the white, only about 2%-8% of visually impaired use the. We believe that if we can make our device more portable and discrete we can provide an alternative that makes them feel more confident while still allowing them a lager level of depth perception.
