Project Description Heading link

The objective of this project is to design a front wing for the UIC Formula vehicle that will create downforce, minimize drag, and balance the moment generated by the rear wing of the vehicle. The front wing must comply with Formula SAE (FSAE) 2020 section T.7 Rules and Regulations. Once mounted, the front wing must not deform more than half of the vehicle ride height under max load. Through research and use of the UIUC airfoil database, the team arrived at a decision to use an S-1223 airfoil profile to base wings designs off of. Each member was assigned to construct a different wing design. These wing designs were then simulated in ANSYS and SimScale to compare the various results and decide on a single preliminary design based on the set of metrics established by the team. A wing design was then selected and was simulated in 2D on ANSYS to determine the angles of attack that will optimize performance. The wing is to be manufactured in 2 inch foam wing profiles that will be glued together, and that will serve as the core for the carbon fiber wing.
