The goal of this project is to design and manufacture a water-resistant lithium battery housing “tank” for an E-PED, or electric moped. Lithium ion batteries, though powerful, have some negative aspects to their use and specific needs. With the use of these our team noticed that the heat generated from their use and the size of the required batteries for the motor would pose a challenge for temperature management and the accessibility of the tank. To correct these issues, the tank design would need to consist of cooling vents and a non-complicated way to access the batteries. The chosen solution to generate an outer curve for the tank using a spline equation which will start and end at mounting points on the frame of the bike. Once the curve is established, several profiles are arranged into a shaping buck which will allow for the fiberglass to hold the desired shape as it cures. Before the fiberglass can be fabricated, CFD thermal analyses are used to find the optimal location for the cooling vents which will help maintain the batteries within their optimal temperatures. The tank design involves three separate pieces of contoured fiberglass material which will fit together around the frame allowing for quick and easy access of the batteries and charger.
