During the pandemic, hospital rooms have been filled with the sounds of ventilators and other machines meant to save the lives of those afflicted with COVID-19. Inside these hospital rooms, healthcare providers must wear the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) with multiple layers covering the mouth, nose, and eyes. This has caused difficulties for healthcare workers to properly communicate and administer lifesaving care. Our wearable device will improve communication between healthcare workers and their patients. The device itself is small enough to fit regular healthcare attire and the microphone and speaker pieces can be attached near the user’s neck. Our desired result is to amplify the user’s voice to their surroundings by about six feet to be in compliance with social-distancing guidelines. The healthcare worker’s voice is processed and amplified by reducing background noise and interference from their environment. We’ve implemented audio processing tools, such as filters and equalizers, using Python and MATLAB programming languages.
