As we begin to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, fitness is more important than ever, especially in the United States, where the prevalence of obesity is a growing concern. In addition, tools for respiration monitoring generally require specifically designed tools or additional accessories. The T.U.F. Stuff app provides a fitness application that can perform respiration calculation all with only a smartphone device. The respiratory rate will be calculated using the recording of the user’s breaths. We do this by creating an envelope around the recorded audio signal to highlight the peaks of each breath. An envelope smooths the signal encompassing the peaks and valleys of the signal. After which we cut up the audio into 1 minute windows counting each peak in those windows. To determine if the user is active or inactive we would calculate the distance between each breath with small distances being active and longer distances being inactive. Respiration could be an indication of user physical activity or possible health issues. Accomplishing this with only a phone application also presents opportunities for future additions or applications in other health-related fields.
