In collaboration with Arizona State University, NASA plans to investigate 16-Psyche and collect surface samples via an autonomous rover, set to release on August 1, 2022. The Psyche mission will be unlike any other in NASA rover history; gravity is incredibly weak, the surface is predominantly metallic, and the max temperature is 280 Kelvin. Keeping these challenges in mind, we designed a rocker bogie driven rover that detects and avoids its surroundings via LiDAR and proximity sensors. The rover can actively avoid obstacles and pitfalls while traversing its environment. While the initial design was not achieved due to hardware complications, we instead have simulated data and shown its capacity to navigate through a simple environment using the Robot Operating System.
