In the hierarchy of needs, the second most important need after finding shelter, your home, is to feel secure in it. Many homeowners assure their security through installing security cameras which act as a deterrent and record the environment in and around their home in case of an incident. However, all too often these cameras fail to capture the needed information during an incident. The subject of interest may be out of view, too far away, or the details of a face too grainy to make out. We propose a solution to ineffective security camera systems, our Area Monitor camera system. The Area Monitor is a system that utilizes computer vision to recognize subjects of interest and motorized mounts to track the subject of interest around the home. Our design successfully recognizes human subjects with high degrees of confidence and accurately tracks the subject throughout the environment. When one camera loses track of the subject the camera notifies neighboring cameras over wireless communications to continue tracking the subject. Combined with the system’s ability to record only when interesting events occur the Area Monitor provides homeowners with high quality video surveillance and assures the security of your home.
