Over the past decade (2014-2024), energy consumption in the US has been increasing by roughly 3% every year, contributing to concerns about reducing energy consumption and mitigating global warming. Over the same time frame, the cost of energy has also been increasing at a rate of 2.64% every year. Without intervention, the well-being of current and future generations could be endangered and the goal to achieve global sustainability would be undermined. Both these factors have brought an increased interest in saving energy and money. In response, we have come up with a Home Energy Monitoring System to solve these problems. Many households save an average of nearly 10% on their power bills in the year after installing an energy monitoring system, with more engaged users saving up to twice that. The implementation of our Home Energy Monitoring System is projected to significantly reduce household energy consumption and expenses, thereby promoting sustainability and financial savings for homeowners. Our project stands out from existing solutions as it offers a plug-and-play system, a feature not currently available on the market. Our project’s main objective is to provide homeowners with real-time insights into their energy consumption patterns, allowing them to make informed decisions to reduce waste and save costs. Our design collects live electrical data from the circuit breakers of a home using a CT sensor (Current Transformer Sensor) connected to a ESP32 microcontroller. As the CT sensor collects data, it will be sent to the ESP32 to be converted into readable data then stored onto a SD card. That data will then be accessible over WIFI by the user through a user-friendly interface on their phone or computer. Our Home Energy Monitoring System not only helps individuals to take control of their energy usage but also contributes to larger-scale efforts in combating climate change and achieving global sustainability goals. By promoting a sense of responsibility and accountability towards energy consumption, our project serves a way towards a more environmentally conscious future.
