Podiatric health is an often neglected but fundamental aspect of personal care. The majority of podiatric issues are not prevalent at birth but rather develop gradually from daily activity. This makes said issues difficult to catch until they have already developed into serious conditions, which shows a need for an affordable device that makes it simple to detect arising conditions. Plantar pressure can be a marker for certain podiatric conditions. Although devices exist on the market that map out plantar pressure, most are not mobile and are designed around selling other products as opposed to detecting podiatric issues. Our project is focused on mapping out the plantar pressure a person’s foot experiences throughout the day. This is done through the use of a pressure sensor array that is placed in the sole of the shoe. The data collected by this array is sent to our smartphone app so that the user may see a map of their plantar pressure distribution and receive warnings for areas where the pressure is abnormally high or low. The collected data can also be sent to the user’s podiatrist for further diagnosis.
