In today’s society, safety is a huge consideration for people walking home late from school or even just going for a leisurely stroll. According to Washington DC, homicide counts in major American cities have increased by 44% in the last year. Furthermore, people are looking for products that can increase their safety and overall well-being. Taking these factors into consideration, we designed a Smart Sensor device that will help people feel more comfortable with their surroundings. The Smart Sensor uses a high definition camera along with a LIDAR sensor that can detect an object 8 meters away. With the help of a mobile application, the smart sensor allows the user to have access to images taken. The design and functionality of the device is focused around the user, as this needs to be prompt and quick. Along with the user interface, we needed the Smart Sensor to be as portable as it could be. The device is reliable, balanced in weight, and easy to access. Our user will feel that this smart sensor is worth the purchase. The Smart Sensor device has three main components which are the Lidar sensor/1080P Camera, Integrated App, and Image Recognition software. Initial results show the distance being taken of various objects and individuals through the Lidar sensor in centimeters. The image recognition software has provided results in recognizing individuals/objects with a minimum of 20% or above. The App communicates with the microcontroller to retrieve the analyzed images received from the Image recognition software. Initial results have shown that an image analyzed by the software is successfully transmitted to the App with the time and location of where the image was taken.
