Each year, 120,000 bike accidents occur where a vehicle strikes a cyclist. This results in over 850 fatalities. A survey of cyclists showed that their greatest safety concern was areas with traffic. To address this concern, we created Lookout. Lookout improves cyclist safety in three ways: vehicle detection, simple alerts, and ride footage recordings. Vehicle detection is performed via machine learning. The user is alerted to detected vehicles by a grid of LEDs, representing their position and proximity, relative to the cyclist. Integrated ride footage recording allows the cyclist to review their ride or an accident, should one occur. As a fully assembled system, Lookout fits on a standard cargo rack, with its alert display in front of the cyclist on their handlebars. Once powered on, Lookout is hands-free, enabling the cyclist to focus on their ride. Simple, visual alerts and a second set of eyes lets the cyclist enjoy their ride with increased confidence and safety.
