SAE at UIC Motorsports is best known for their combustion engine Formula and Baja vehicles. This year the organization has begun development of their first Formula Electric race car. This includes designing a Lithium-ion battery pack and battery management system to safely and efficiently power their vehicle. FSAE Electric events are known for their strict technical and safety inspections during pre-competition static events. During a 2021 event held in Nevada, only 10% of participating teams passed all inspections in order to compete in dynamic events. Our engineering team has designed a fully functional battery pack and battery management system that adheres to all FSAE safety rules and regulations. Our system is based on four identical battery modules along with a monitoring system, designed around Analog Devices IC’s, that provides accurate voltage, current, and temperature monitoring. We are presenting our management system, including ⅕ of a single module, through a protoboard to show our accuracy of monitoring and control of all safety regulation circuitry. We have also created a graphic user interface, used for diagnostics and real-time data gathering and parameter observation. Our protoboard and GUI have been utilized to test and gather data of discharging our battery pack along with testing fault conditions.
