An alarming number of vehicular crashes occur in school zones- high risk areas where the safety of young people is of utmost importance and where injuries, if they happen, are all the more severe. To combat this epidemic in Chicago, in 2003, the city proposed installing speed cameras in these high-risk zones in the hopes of incentivizing drivers to be more aware of their surroundings or else risk a fine. Fast forward to 2022, despite raking in $84.5 million in revenue for the city, accidents in school zones tripled and injuries quadrupled compared to the previous year. Regardless of prominent warning signs, drivers are frequently surprised by these cameras, particularly in busy areas. These cameras are now sparking debate about the balance between road safety and fair ticketing. One thing is certain, speed cameras are failing to halt this problem in cities across the nation, and ultimately, this finding demonstrates a vital need for a driving aid. Consequently, our team devised an innovative solution pairing artificial intelligence and machine vision with all the functionality of a dash camera. Our solution revolutionizes road safety by scanning the road ahead for hazards in real-time. Our technology promptly alerts drivers in less than two seconds to risks they might not immediately notice, such as overlooked road signs or red-light cameras. By providing these critical alerts, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and traffic violations, ensuring a safer driving environment for all.
