Schools and hospitals sometimes use ultraviolet light to disinfect rooms, which may be harmful to students and patients if they are not aware of the exposure to ultraviolet. The sounds of gunshots in these places are also indications of severe safety issues. In response to these possible safety hazards, we design and develop a system called “Distributed Sensor Monitoring System for Classroom and Hospital Safety”. The system is composed of a central monitoring unit that receives data from multiple remote units over Wi-Fi. Each remote unit is equipped with a UV, audio, motion, and smoke sensors, which continuously sample and transmit to a central monitoring unit. The central monitoring unit produces an HD-quality television signal sent to a large display, which clearly shows the status of each room using different colors. Our goal is to make it simple for a person to assess the safety situation in the entire building with just one glance at the central monitor display. In addition to a visual display, our central monitor will make an audible alarm to warn extremely dangerous conditions. Our system is designed to protect students and patients from the harm of ultraviolet light, smoke, gunfire in schools and hospitals by immediately letting the authority know these conditions and take relevant actions. Compared with existing products on the market, our product has these advantages: sensor data from the remote monitoring units are displayed on a large screen that is easy to understand; each remote sensing unit is self-contained and easily configured; and the central monitoring unit is easily programmed to display a specific floor plan.
