Given that the primary causes of AVS are vestibular neuritis (low severity nerve inflammation) and cerebellar ischemic stroke, it is clinically relevant to be able to diagnose the cause in a timely and effective manner and for the patient to receive appropriate treatment. The Head-Impulse-Nystagmus-Test-of-Skew (HINTS) exam proves to be an optimal approach in the diagnosis of AVS. However, clinicians do not have the confidence or sufficient knowledge to perform the physical oculomotor exam. Such is the case within the clinicians of the emergency departments of hospitals. These doctors often need to refer to an expert for proper verification to make the correct decision. A proposed way to circumvent this problem is by creating an accessible smartphone-based system to be used during the HINTS exam. This proposed solution is divided into two components, a hardware and a software component. The software component is designed to record and store videos of eye movement from patients with AVS, while the hardware component is designed to hold the smartphone. The hardware component is designed so that it can be adjusted for optimal positioning to accurately perform the HINTS exam recordings. Ultimately, it is our goal to allow clinicians to have the option to play back the examination recordings and be confident their assessments of patients with AVS.
