Access to fresh water is limited in many areas across the world. According to the CDC, approximately 790 million people, or 11% of the world’s population, live without access to a fresh water supply. In order to preserve water, our goal is to design a device that allows people to control the flow of faucet water using a foot pedal. A method such as the one we developed would help people save hundreds of gallons of water a month. Having a device that is convenient to use and easy to install will allow for water conservation without hassle. The system utilizes a feedback loop between sensors and a microcontroller to achieve accurate water temperature and pressure output and total water consumption tracking. The placement of the foot pedal at the base of the sink allows for seamless integration into user routine. Additionally, our web interface allows a user to easily access water consumption statistics. In the future, our website could be integrated into a phone application for a more convenient user interface. Also, a manual override system could be installed so the faucet can be operated traditionally if the user chooses so.
