Project Description Heading link

The Village of La Grange has been experiencing devastating flooding events for decades which this project plans to alleviate by incorporating three new flood mitigating components into their community: by installing a new stormwater sewer system, providing an underground stormwater storage tank, and implementing green infrastructure. This project will be focusing on reducing flooding in a major depression located in and around the intersection of 50th Street and Spring Avenue. The stormwater sewer system will  replace their current combined sewer system to reduce the volumetric traffic in drainage pipes, thus eliminating their combined sewer overflow issue. After calculating the length of the new pipelines, 2146 feet, their slopes, diameters, and material costs could be determined. These concrete pipelines will eventually connect to the new storage tank to be built on a nearby elementary school’s field. The underground stormwater storage tank allows for a cleaner collection of stormwater; the stormwater will be gradually disposed of into a pre-existing stormwater sewer line, with assistance from a pump, when drainage traffic is low. The required volumetric storage of the tank was calculated to be 11.7 acre-ft. The best fitting material for this tank will be modular precast concrete. Green infrastructure includes the addition of permeable pavement and bioswales, both which will improve water quality, infrastructure lifespan, and much more. Permeable pavers will cover 6100 square feet of residential roads and will significantly increase the infiltration of the heavily urbanized area. The bioswales will provide much needed immediate storage. This project utilized various programs and data to determine the needed information for calculations and to create models These components include, but are not limited to: Win TR-20, AutoCAD, Revit, arcGIS, and Bulletin 75. The flood mitigation improvements will be funded by the Village of La Grange and grants through other entities. Necessary permitting and testing were researched and taken into consideration for these designs.
