The Illinois route 59 (IL-59), Interstate highway 88 (I-88) signalized diverging diamond interchange (DDI) located in Naperville (IL), was preliminarily redesigned in its type, size, and location (TS&L) in this interchange design study (IDS). Existing site conditions are anticipated to facilitate traffic demand until 2030. Proposed improvements, based on existing conditions and AECOM’s Intersection Design Study (2011) and IDoT contract 60I31 phase 2 plans, facilitate traffic demand until 2050. The existing interchange features two main crossover points where northbound and southbound traffic switch sides of the road at signalized intersections with additional traffic signals located on the I-88 on/off ramps. The presence of timed signals introduces delay to the interchange and reduces traffic flow efficiency. To eliminate the need for signalization on the interchange, the northbound lanes were raised allowing for the removal of two points of interference between traffic flows. I-88 on and off ramps were regraded/redesigned to accommodate for grade changes due to the designalization and shared bicycle/pedestrian pathways across the interchange were redesigned to meet ADA standards.
