Battle of The Rockets: Mars Rover for The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics at UIC

Project description Heading link

The Battle of the Rockets competition sponsored by the Federation of Galaxy Explorers is held every year to challenge students on creating a vehicle that will be launched and deployed from a rocket and then land successfully to perform semi-autonomous objectives. The Mars rover design is in collaboration with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Chapter at UIC. The design will incorporate the design constraints set by the sponsor of the competition and will limit the rover in weight and functionality. The rover described in this report is designed to launch from an amateur high-power rocket to an altitude greater than 1000 feet above ground level and no more than 3000 feet above ground level. Once the rover has launched, deployed, and landed, it is required to autonomously move forward, then take a picture and a soil sample when commanded by a remote control. The Federation of Galaxy Explorers holds this competition as part of their initiative to develop interest in aerospace projects with college students in order to generate more aerospace professionals in the future.
