The UIC chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) will be undertaking for its 6th year the Student Design Competition (SDC) hosted by the national organization. This year, the 2019 competition will be the ‘Pick and Place Race,’ where the designed robot must pick up a ball that may vary in size from a golf ball to a basketball. There will be 16 balls placed within a 4x4m square in a 5x5m arena. The aim is to pick up as many balls and place them in a collection area within 5 minutes. The robot must also fit within a 50x50x50cm box. The designed robot was manufactured so that it complies with the official rules created by the ASME national organization. The team has accomplished a robot that is capable of swiftly retrieving balls of various sizes and depositing them at a designated location.
