At Fermilab, one 35KeV ion source creates the beam used for all experimentation within the particle accelerator complex.  For this reason, preserving a cleaner beam profile is critical for efficient operation of downstream instruments. Post ion generation, the beam passes through the 750 KeV Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), which utilizes magnets to refine the beam profile. The efficiency of an un-collimated beam falls by approximately 40% after passing through the RFQ. Therefore, this project consisted of designing, prototyping, assembling, and analysis of a primary collimator for installation in a toroid vacuum chamber within the beamline that can provide a cleaner beam profile before entering the RFQ, with the objective of improving beam efficiency post RFQ. The prototype collimator features bidirectional collimation control with a goal to reduce beam scatter post hydrogen ion generation and improve the overall beam efficiency by 5%.
