On average, motorcycle accidents in the United States account for around 80,000 injuries and 5,000 fatalities each year. We are creating a smart helmet with the intent to reduce these numbers by providing motorcyclists with advanced safety features that can decrease the risk of an accident. These features include: blind spot detection, crash detection, an emergency SOS beacon, and a forward collision warning system. Our blind spot detection will be used to notify the rider of any vehicle outside of their peripheral view through LED feedback. The crash detection system uses force sensitive resistors to detect any impacts to the helmet. If an impact is detected, the device triggers an alert that is sent over bluetooth to the rider’s smartphone. An app, which we have developed, receives this alert and proceeds to send the rider’s GPS coordinates from their phone to local emergency services or preferred contacts. Finally, our forward collision warning system uses vibration motors and flashing LEDs which will alert the rider to slow down if they seem to be rapidly approaching an oncoming object. It is our hope that these preventive measures will provide motorists with peace of mind when traveling by reducing their risk of falling into harm’s way.
