The project aims to improve the flood protection of a neighborhood between the streets of Roosevelt, Austin, Lombard, and 16th Avenue within Cicero. It entails mitigating the basement flooding issues residents are experiencing. The neighborhood has experienced severe storms and heavy rain throughout the years and their current flood control measures are insufficient to fully resist and tolerate the flooding. Map analysis of catch basins, manholes, pipes, and sewer systems that have been developed will be studied. The project will require documents provided by CMAP, MWRD, FEMA, and other resources like OSHA, to develop a solution for flooding. Possible mitigation solutions that will be evaluated to stop flooding are check valves, green and gray infrastructure, permeable pavement, and retention systems.

Building a retention system in affected areas is the most optimal solution. Using software like PCSWMM and Civil 3D will accurately calculate and design a retention system. Significant stakeholders will be pursued as they can provide important insights, support, and the necessary resources for the project to be completed. After researching and reviewing the current situation of the neighborhood between the streets of Roosevelt, Austin, Lombard, and 16th Avenue in Cicero, the proposed drainage improvements will increase flood protection, which aims to decrease runoff and basement flooding.
