The Lake County 2050 Vision Project focuses on the improvement of Deerfield Road at the intersection of Saunders Road/Riverwoods Road based on the future 2050 design year traffic, safety and the geometric needs. Deerfield Road and Saunders Road/Riverwoods Road is a critical intersection of two County Routes that is adjacent to an interchange with I-94 which serves regional traffic. Traffic is projected to increase nearly 30 percent by the year 2050, which will cause congestion and backups as well as safety and mobility issues. The Lake County Division of Transportation initiated a Phase I Engineering Study at this critical intersection inorder to meet the 2050 projected traffic data requirements and to address the safety concerns. The design components include: traffic analysis, geometric roadway design, intersection layout, alternative design analysis and roadway safety analysis. The team will conduct various analyses and studies to propose a new design that encompasses all of the identified transportation needs at this intersection. There is a large array of stakeholders involved in the Lake County 2050 Vision Project including: the residents, communities, businesses, utilities, and higher quality natural environment that will be affected either directly or indirectly by the team’s implemented design. The design of the proposed improvement will be influenced by the stakeholders’ considerations. The project design will follow IDOT/Federal Design Guidelines to make the project eligible for federal funding, and to ensure the efficiency as well as the safety of the new intersection design. The proposed design will ensure that the intersection at Saunders Road, Riverwoods Road, and Deerfield Road will address the existing and future capacity, safety, and mobility issues.
