Project Description Heading link

Engineers for a Sustainable World, one of UIC’s engineering student organizations, is interested in competing in the Collegiate Wind Competition and designing a wind turbine for the UIC campus. The purpose of this senior design project is to establish a baseline process for designing, testing, and evaluating a vertical axis wind turbine. Design constraints and testing parameters are based on CWC rules and guidelines. We have evaluated a variety of vertical axis designs to determine which type will perform best in an urban environment. This process included designing a series of turbines in Solidworks, simulating testing parameters in ANSYS, and construction of a prototype for wind tunnel testing. This work has been performed on Savonius, H-Type Darrius, Helical, and Hybrid turbine blades.
